Typically that’s what really counts, the quality of the movie - usually the only thing that counts. But there’s more to the story, and this time it actually matters. And director Niki Caro certainly has a way with large-scale, tightly choreographed battle and training scenes. That’s a function of the script, not the actor - this is a drama, not a comic musical. It’s a good movie, yay for that, and Yifei Liu brings the fierce, balletic warrior’s grace to the title role, if not the sense of playfulness her cartoon counterpart had. Disney continues the parade of live-action remakes of its beloved collection of animated films with “Mulan,” but it arrives with more than the usual attention.
